Search for missing rock fisherman, Pambula

South Coast's Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter was called to assist in the search for a 56 year old Canberra man who had been fishing at Haystack Point, south of Pambula yesterday.   His property including personal belongings, food and some fish were found late yesterday afternoon but there was no sign of the man.

An initial search through to nightfall last night was unsuccessful and the search resumed this morning at 0800 hours.

Lifesaver 3, local surf lifesavers, Water Police vessels, Marine Rescue NSW and NSW Maritime vessels conducted an extensive air, land and sea search throughout the day.

“Every indication is that the current is moving to the north,” said Westpac Life Saver CEO, Stephen Leahy.   “The current is reasonably slow, and is generally staying close to the shore.  This has allowed us to set up our aerial search patterns and these are extending as far north to Tura Head and south towards the Ben Boyd National Park.

Ocean conditions have improved overnight but the surface is still choppy.  Nevertheless light winds are ideal for searching.

UPDATE: Sadly, the man's body was located by Water Police late this evening.  R.I.P.
